Barra & Eel Tailed Catfish, original canvas paper painting by local Bininj artist John Rocky Cahill.

Dimensions: 41.5cm x 57.5cm

Namarnkol (barramundi), is one of the main food sources for the locals all year around. It is also one of the totem animals for many indigenous, as well as Dreaming in many sites.  Namarnkol is even told in stories to be kept as pets of the Yawk Yawk spirits.

Traditionally, Bininj used to spear them at billabongs, rivers and floodwaters. Today the locals go fishing with lines and modern nets, yet sometimes with spears, and they know the best fishing spots all around Kakadu. Barramundi is for many the best tucker around, mah!

Eel Tailed catfish, bikkurr or namardaka in the local Kunwok language, is one of the various animals many Bininj locals in Kakadu have as their dreaming animals. Catfish is also an available food source for the locals all year round.

This artwork has been purchased directly from an Aboriginal artist in Kakadu National Park or Arnhem Land. Warradjan Cultural Centre is committed to supporting artists, their families and the local community.
